Asturias (Leyenda) is my all time favorite classical guitar piece. This is the piece that made me want to play the classical guitar. Up until that time I just wanted to “rock out” on my electric guitar.
I started playing the classical guitar my freshman year at Hope College. My high school graduation gift from my parents was a 1984 Alverez Classical Guitar. My father knew there was a classical guitar instructor at Hope College and was hoping I would take the class. The summer before my freshman year I listened to a CD of classical guitar pieces performed by John Williams. I remember being fascinated by this piece titled, Asturias. I couldn’t believe that all came from one guitar. I knew after listening to that recording that I HAD to play that piece.
In reality, it is because of this piece that I decided to become a music major, and then to become a composer, and then to become a teacher. So this one piece has shaped my life for the last 18 years.
I hope you enjoy,
Rob
