I am also working on my Year of the Guitar Series (YOTG). I’ve completed 11 and am currently working on #12. For this series I am also looking to compose about 20 pieces. Right now I am alternating composing a YOTG piece followed by a hymn. I am going to arrange Of the Father’s Love Begotten next.
This is my arrangement of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. I have a 7-year-old guitar student who loves to play Twinkle in the minor mode. After the lesson I started improvising on the melody and came up with this arrangement.
Silent Night is a classic Christmas carol. Here is a recording of my arrangement for classical guitar:
The words were written by Joseph Mohr, a priest, and the music by Franz Gruber. The story goes that Mohr wanted music played at the Christmas eve service, but the organ was broken. Mohr asked Gruber to write a melody to the words he had written. So that evening, on December 24th, 1816, Silent Night (Stille Nacht) was performed for the first time with guitar accompaniment. I don’t know if that is the actual story, but that is what John Denver told me on the classic LP, John Denver and the Muppets.
